STMicroelectronics released the IPS1025HF fast-start high-side power switch for safety systems requiring minimum power-on delay time. The switch includes undervoltage protection, overvoltage protection, overload protection, short circuit protection, ground protection, and Vcc disconnection protection. On-chip diagnostics include outputting a single signal for overload and junction overtemperature, with an additional thermal sensor to detect excessive case temperature. The device meets IEC 61000-4-2 ESD, IEC 61000-4-4 and IEC 61000-4-5 ESD, fast transient and surge immunity specifications.

The switch responds to turn-on and turn-off signals below 60 μs, allowing the protection system to provide the specified SIL, even taking into account the turn-on and turn-off of Vcc. This compact device withstands harsh industrial operating conditions, offers a wide input voltage range from 8.65V to 60V, and tolerates voltages up to 65V on the input pins. Applications include power control for PLCs, vending machines, factory automation I/O peripherals, and CNC machine tools.

The output stage is an n-channel power MOSFET with a typical Rds(on) of 12.5mOhm at ambient temperature, ensuring high energy efficiency and low heat dissipation. The MOSFET is internally limited to a minimum output current of 2.5A, and single-pulse avalanche energy is up to 14J, providing reliability for handling inductive loads. There is also an integrated active clamp for quick degaussing.

Like similar single-channel and dual-device devices in the company's family of smart power switches, the switch has two programmable current-limit settings, allowing users to program higher current-limit values when the power switch is activated. This increases the flexibility to drive loads, including light bulbs, motors, and capacitive loads that require high initial peak currents.

For quick evaluation, the x-Nucleo out15a1 expansion board contains an IPS1025HF with associated circuitry ready to be connected to the STM32 Nucleo development board. A demo firmware package STSW-OUT15F4 and industrial automation system design GUI STSW-IFAPGUI are also provided, allowing users to implement the entire industrial automation environment on the desktop.
