Thingy:53 is based on Nordic's nRF5340 dual-core Arm Cortex M-33 multi-protocol SoC with nPM1100 PMIC, nRF21540 FEM and PA/LNA. This allows embedded ML models to run directly on the device. The prototype platform has multiple motion and environmental sensors, as well as a 1350mAh lithium battery. It supports Bluetooth LE, Thread, Matter, Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4, NFC and Bluetooth Mesh RF protocols.

Integrated ML capabilities allow developers to use the device's sensors in applications such as speech recognition or motion pattern recognition. For example, accelerometers and microphones with pulse density modulation wake the nRF5340 SoC from standby mode when triggered by motion or sound. This efficient use also extends battery life. Additionally, by keeping the platform in sleep mode for as long as possible, power-efficient ML applications can be achieved.

Thingy:53 contains multiple sensors that measure humidity, temperature, air quality and pressure, as well as ambient light and color. The platform also provides a low-power accelerometer and a six-axis inertial measurement unit. MEMS microphones and buzzers complete the product along with individually programmable buttons and RGB leds.
